Dr. Mats Grindal, Enea ,Sweden
Dr. Mats Grindal received master´s degree in computer science and engineering from Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan in Stockholm in 1992. In 2007 he received his PhD in testing from UniversityofLinköping. His research is focused on selection of test cases.
Dr. Grindal also has 15 years experience from testing in industry, working as a consultant with Enea. His professional interests include test strategy and test process improvements. He is a frequently used speaker in national and international conferences and has long experience in teaching testers in industry.
Handling Combinatorial Explosion in Software Testing
Combinatorial explosion occurs frequently in software testing. It arises when a system under test (SUT) has several parameters, each with many possible values. The number of combinations of parameter values (i.e. potential test cases) quickly becomes too large to test exhaustively.
Taking a practical perspective, this seminar, based on the author´s recently published PhD thesis, presents a test process handling combinatorial explosion. The seminar explains (i) selection of coverage level (e.g., pair-wise coverage), (ii) parameter identification, and (iii) handling incompatible (sub-)combinations. The seminar also demonstrates a useful tool which is freely available on the Internet.
